Well, she didn’t quite say that, but it doesn’t take much more for me to think, this is the kind of guest I want to talk to, so here she is.
This is a lady that like most of us got to a point in her life, when she looked at her job, and her personal situation and thought “I never want to be an employee again”
Which can be one of the greatest realisations for self development, and the worst.
You have the focus to take your life to where you want to be, but more often than not, you don’t have any idea how to do it.
And that is the case with todays guest who then tried out various businesses to find her thing.
She started a staff recruitment agency, became a franchisee of a chocolate brand, did freelance web designing, and none really hit the spot.

Yes, hello bear world how are every single one of you? This is Episode 406 of Join Up Dots ins big excitement in the Join Up Dots world today. Yes, this is the first episode this year but I’m recording whilst wearing shorts. If you’ve been in the United Kingdom all year, where is summer we haven’t had summer at all and even though today isn’t really summer I’ve got my legs out. So hopefully that’s a little bit of excitement for all of you. I don’t know if that’s going to accelerate my guest as much I should have told her about my half nudity before we actually started recording, because she is a guest, but um, contacted me to say, I think I should be on your show because I’m flexing the old hustle muscle every day. Where are you speaking to me for because this I know this but this blows my mind every single time that we can do these kinds of shows and it doesn’t really cost us anything at all. So whereabouts are you sitting? When we’re speaking?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [3:25]
I’m talking to you from Chennai, it is one of the metro cities in India.

And what is life like out there? So what’s the time difference at the moment? It’s 10 past 10 in the morning for me in the United Kingdom, what’s your time?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [3:38]
It is 240 in the afternoon we are five and a half hours apart. You know I didn’t
David Ralph [3:45]
know that you got half hours I assumed that everything was on hours. So you can get half our differences as well. So what’s uh what’s life like in Chennai then what what what would you do every morning you wake up and and what would be a sort of normal day in the Or maybe there isn’t one.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [4:03]
Now I’ve started working a kind of routine just to be more productive. I typically get up, get up at around 430 or five o’clock, I was never like this until my daughter was born. So after becoming a mother, I’ve become an early riser. And I would do a bit of a morning routine, you know, and then I would start off with my work. So the first half of the day would be typically doing all the creative stuff like writing and creating content for my blog and all that. And the second half of the day would be to manage my virtual assistants and seeing what they’re doing and doing all the administrative kind of tasks. And I tried to wrap up the day by five o’clock so that my husband and I could take out our daughter, play in the park and visit my parents and have a quiet dinner and that’s about it. Simple Life.
David Ralph [4:50]
So have you done it to the point because I haven’t got there yet, where your family actually think that you don’t work for a living because whenever they’re there, you’re just floating around being mom Being live.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [5:02]
Right? Um, you’re asking me how I got to this point.
David Ralph [5:06]
Now at the moment when your family come home, do they think that you actually do anything is all the work you do hidden whilst they’re away and as soon as they walk back in the door, you’re your mom and wife cooking dinner and being the sort of normal person
Jyotsna Ramachandran [5:21]
right actually took my family quite a bit of time to understand that I am actually working from home, because they would think that I’m, you know, just watching YouTube videos or being on Facebook, but actually, I’m running an online business and it took them some time to understand that, you know, during my workouts I’m working and they cannot just keep coming and disturbing me. So I have a small kind of a home office at home, it’s basically a desk, you know, it’s a part of my bedroom. And I tell them that from this time to this time, I’m at work, so that that is basically a time when I cannot be disturbed. So that’s something which I had to tell them of some time back until then, it was quite challenging because my mom would just Calling me for shopping. And no, my husband would call me for a movie and they wouldn’t understand that I’m actually working from home. So it took me some time. But now because I have a certain schedule, and they have also understood that and now my husband also works from home, I motivated him to quit his job. So it’s been a few months that he also works from home. So we have our own schedules, and we just don’t cross that line. And is it the
David Ralph [6:21]
hardest thing because I know so many of my listeners have the idea and I think I had the idea but once I became an entrepreneur, it was gonna be all pub lunches and walking around in the garden in the afternoon and it was gonna be lovely. But once I actually started, I haven’t seen a pub or lunch or a bit of sunshine for months and months a month. Do you find that when you started was a culture shock to you, but the liberation that you think that you’re going to get being an entrepreneur just isn’t there at the beginning?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [6:53]
Um, you are actually right, David, when I started, I was thinking that life is going to be you know, quite easy because now There is no boss to watch what I’m doing. So initially I got into the trap, I would plan that I would do a lot of things during the day, but I would end up getting distracted. And I would, you know, not focus on my work. This was my previous business. And obviously, at the end of the month business would suffer, because I’m not an employee where I would get a fixed salary every month. So which then I began to understand that my work is going to be directly proportional to, you know, how successful I am, it’s not a fixed salary anymore. So that really was it did take me some time around six months to actually form a schedule where I could work, you know, a fixed number of hours every day from a particular place. But now as you’re saying, now, now that I’ve started seeing some kind of success, I’m beginning to work on more and more projects. So I’m getting lesser and lesser time to do all the other you know, leisure kind of stuff, which is actually not a bad thing because I’m able to do all the great things in life and exploring different projects so that way, I have no complaints But that’s the key thing isn’t it when
David Ralph [8:01]
you’re an employee, he and you go to work and they give you a load of work more often than not, it’s boring stuff. And you don’t really want to do it. You’d love to be sitting there watching YouTube and Facebook and all that kind of stuff. But you have to do the task, which is fair enough, and you get paid for it at the end of the month or end of the week or whatever, when you are entrepreneurial. After a while it becomes play, I certainly have found that doing what I’m doing. And once you get a certain amount of success, and people start believing in you, you get opportunities come your way. And the work becomes less and less because it becomes more playful somehow. And you actually enjoy it to the point that it’s very difficult to say, Oh, I’m not just going to rush off to my office because I’ve got half hour to do because you’re just fascinated with what you’re creating. When did that kick in for you? When did you get past that first stage and realise that actually, I love this. This This isn’t an advert for me. This is actually All I want to do in life.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [9:02]
And that’s a great question, David, because now I am beginning to see that work is not work anymore, but it is more fun. This was a few months back, I got started publishing books on Kindle. So I would find great topics that sell well on Amazon and I would outsource the writing to writers and I would focus on other things like, you know, marketing, the books and all that. And I started enjoying myself because I didn’t have to work for eight hours or 10 hours a day. That’s when I had my baby. So I had enough time to focus on my kid and I would just spend two, three hours a day just publishing the books. So that is when I started enjoying the work because I was not forced to doing something. And that’s the same time when I started employing virtual assistants. So in my business, there were certain tasks which I would never enjoy doing, like you know, posting the book link on hundred Facebook groups, you know, these are the monotonous kind of stuff which I would not enjoy doing. So I would outsource all this work to others and I would only focus on things that I like Doing like, you know, interacting with other authors and publishers and, you know, finding interesting stuff, topics on the internet that I could publish my next books on. So that’s when I began enjoying the process. Also, I think when once I started learning how to outsource the non interesting stuff, that’s when I started enjoying it. And after becoming an author, I’m enjoying it even more, because now I do, I do a lot of content kind of work, which is much more interesting than the routine tasks. So I think the transition happened just some six months back, and I’m now enjoying it,
David Ralph [10:33]
because I found it, I still find it quite difficult to outsource the boring stuff because I think ah, I can just do it quickly. I know I don’t want to do it, but I can just do it quickly. And you’re actually I suppose in many ways, you’re in the hub of virtual assistant Lan, most sort of them. Companies will be looking at the Philippines and India for hiring vas virtual assistants who will do that work. Is it easy For you to have the mindset of handing it over to somebody, if the in the same sort of environment as yourself, because I found it very, very difficult to hand it over to a gentleman, even though he did a very good job.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [11:14]
Hmm. I think that irrespective of where you come from David because for me, it is the personal quality that you know, I was a perfectionist, you know, till some time back where I would only be happy when I do something and I would not trust another person and outsource the work that was the problem I initially had. But I started to realise that I became an entrepreneur so that I could have more freedom of time. But when I ended in the end up doing all the tasks in my business, then it’s totally defeating the purpose. Only when I understood this I started I started letting go. When I started letting go I started getting more time for myself and I started trusting my ways more
David Ralph [11:55]
jobs now that that initial stumbling block where you think ah, I haven’t got that much money. It’s a fledgling business I’m creating. I don’t want to pay somebody to do something that I can just do myself. How do you break free from that superhero syndrome that so many entrepreneurs have, when there’s not a lot of cash at the beginning?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [12:15]
Um, yeah, I think when somebody’s starting off there when it’s best to start doing everything by yourself so that you understand the complete process. Of course, if you’re capable of doing then you can, but of certain tasks. For example, I’m not a designer, so I, initially I can’t imagine designing a book cover myself. So such tasks have to be outsourced. I know a lot of friends who know use, you know, a PowerPoint or a paint kind of software or even Canva if they don’t even know Photoshop. So what happens is the quality really suffers and when they try to cut costs on such such tasks, then it’s not gonna work. But what I would say is that once you start understanding the whole process, then you can start looking for ways to get it done at a low price you need not spend thousands of dollars hiring virtual assistants. So I think that’s where my location is an advantage because I don’t even have to go on these virtual assistant websites to hire people, I can just post a, you know, a status on Facebook and a lot of my friends would apply for the virtual assistant jobs because because I live in India. So that’s an advantage I have, but I think it is difficult for people who who like to be superheroes and do everything themselves, but I think if the business has to grow, one has to know what they have to do, and what the what the others can do instead of them. So say at the point is, I can be better than my virtual assistant in certain things. But the question is, am I the only person who can do this? Or can somebody else do this at you know, a fraction of the price? So I think some people what they do is they typically calculate the price. If I spent one hour doing this, then how much what is the opportunity cost of doing that myself versus outsourcing it to somebody else, and if the outsourcing part is cheaper, then just close your eyes and give it away to somebody else.
David Ralph [13:59]
So So what what’s your super talent? Ben, if you could take away everything that you don’t want to do, first of all, and then everything that you do like doing, but just retain that one thing that you think that you can do better than anyone else, your super talent? What would that be?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [14:18]
Oh, my super talent, is it? Oh, I’ve never thought about this, David. I think right now I’m enjoying doing video blogs. So I would love to keep coming in front of the camera and doing it myself rather than outsourcing that part of the job to anybody else. Because now people who are following me are used to seeing my face and listening to my voice so I wouldn’t have outsourced that to anybody else.
David Ralph [14:39]
Because it is the key thing, isn’t it? Once you narrow down and you niche down onto that one thing, but you do better than most people, then that is actually where the true value comes. And that is one of the things that we’re going to talk about in a moment because when you started all your businesses, you were doing businesses, it seemed to me just to create money. It was the end task. Now you’re doing stuff that you feel plays to your inherent talents. And that’s when money actually comes to you quicker in many ways. And you save that if you see that the sort of the real rich and famous Hollywood actors, the real guys have got up there pretty much play the same role every single time. If you see that Bruce Willis or Arnold Schwarzenegger, they keep on doing what we like, which is easy for them, and then they get more money from it. So when you look back at those early businesses, was there a lot of effort that has panned out because you’ve learned what worked and what didn’t work? But were you just going for stuff that you fall? This will make money and not actually thinking? I’m gonna love doing this?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [15:43]
You’re absolutely right. David, when I started off, I had to prove to people that I can be an entrepreneur and I will never have to go back to work. And for that I had to, you know, be self sufficient in terms of the money I’m I was making so for me initially when I quit My job, my priority was to start a business that would start giving me money from the first month. And for me, the easiest thing to do at that time was to start a staff recruitment company because I was anyway recruiting people when I was a manager at a retail store. So that was the easiest thing I thought, but it involved a lot of work because it actually did not come naturally. And I had to make over 100 phone calls every day. So it was quite taxing. And that’s when I realised that I was just going after, you know, the money that was coming from the business and I was not seeing money as the byproduct but I was just going after that. But now, you know, my goals and my purpose have I have tried to realign it based on my current life. And I feel now that I have been able to be an entrepreneur for the last three years and I see a lot of my friends are still stuck in the jobs that they’re not liking. So I feel right now my purpose is to show direction to people who don’t believe that they could be entrepreneurs who don’t believe that they can work from home. So right now my purpose is like I have this mission that a lot of people like me should become home entrepreneurs who can just stay at home and do stuff that they enjoy doing so because now I have a bigger purpose, I’m totally enjoying all the right thing, all the videos, and I’m right now creating a course. So now it’s enjoyment. And I’m sure because I’m helping a lot more people money is definitely going to keep coming as a byproduct. So I feel that anyone who starts off initially, if they have that mindset, it’s going to be a lot easier to grow to the next level, rather than having money as the focus.
David Ralph [17:34]
So really, for the listeners out there sitting in their cubicles hanging on every word, forget about the money. Just think about what you would really love doing, first of all, because when it gets difficult and it is difficult, right at the very beginning to sort of get momentum, that enjoyment will push you through. And if you’re just doing it for money, it just becomes a task and you’ll give up on it. Is that what we’re saying?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [17:56]
Exactly. You’re right.
David Ralph [17:58]
So how do you decide Then what you need to do, how do you decide when you’re trying things and you’re making money? And you’ve got that recruitment agency and you’re making those 100 calls? How do you decide that? Okay, I am making money from this. But this isn’t right. For me, it’s time to move on.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [18:17]
Right? I think that I, I was able to make a decision because I started asking myself, what is my ideal lifestyle? What kind of life do I want? Is it just so much amount of money every month? Or do I want something more in terms of time in terms of another quality of life basically, so that was not getting aligned with the kind of business I was running. So that’s when I started trying different things. And one after the other, I thought that I should I never considered myself to be a creative person. But just out of curiosity, I learned how to set up a WordPress website for my dad, and I enjoyed that. So I thought, Okay, let me start designing websites for people, but I will later realise that I like designing websites Based on my taste, and not based on what my client wants to me to do, so it was very difficult for me to coordinate with my client. So basically, anything that I did it involved, anything that anybody does, it involves a lot of different things interacting with people working on different kinds of projects. So one has to see whether they happy doing what they’re doing. So if in some point at you know, one, but if one part of the project is not enjoyable, they should see whether they able to outsource it and retain the rest of the staff. But if the entire business itself is not something that’s right for them, then it’s better that they realise that quickly and come out of it, so that they can do something which is much better than that. So I think that’s all that’s when I realised that I shouldn’t be in any business that allows me that forces me to be on phone calls with my clients and all my previous businesses. Were making me to go out of the house, do a lot of meetings with clients and you know, that would really drain my energy and I was not that kind of person. You know, going out and meeting people and talking about With a phone for hours, and that’s when I decided that I should do something on the internet so that I don’t have to be, you know, talking to people all the time talking to people like you is fun, David, because you know, you’re having a conversation. Oh, he’s
David Ralph [20:12]
saying that cuz we’re recording I bet Yep. I bet you will nasty about me afterwards.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [20:18]
No, not at all. I’m telling you the truth, you know, because I talk to a lot of entrepreneurs over Facebook and over Skype, and it’s so much fun, sharing knowledge. This is a different kind of conversation. But when you go to sell something to a client, and you’re not you, yourself are not very sure of the product or the service, then it’s a different thing. So I didn’t want to be in a business where I would be at the mercy of my clients, you know, so this internet business is something that fascinated me. And I started doing a lot of research on that. And that’s how I found out that Kindle publishing is an option where I could, you know, just be at home, do one part of the task and outsource the rest of it and enjoy life. So that’s what I’m doing right now. And it’s fun.
David Ralph [20:57]
It’s a real mindset though, isn’t it? Joe’s? Not because I know that you’re creating a business with a lady in Armenia, which you probably have never met. And when you are an employee and you’re in a job, you kind of think to yourself, I’ve got to find my best mate who I know because this is how I did it originally, I thought to myself, yeah, somebody that I like going out for a drink with would be a good business partner, I will be able to create a business. Now I think to myself, what was I thinking back because I’ve got business partners in America, I’ve got business partners, you know, all over the place. I connect right? virtually, and you tap into a talent pool that you just couldn’t otherwise could you because everybody is doing different things. And if you find the right person, it doesn’t matter where they are. You just get the timezones, right, you connect. And then Bob’s your uncle, as we say, over here, you’re creating a business and if the two of you work really well together, then it’s usually valuable. But there is that mindset that you’ve got to switch off that you think to yourself, I only work with People that I can actually touch.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [22:03]
You will vary, right, David because it has nothing to do with where the person lives or for how long you know that person in order to be a good business partner, because as you would, as you rightly mentioned, I met Annie over a podcast interview, you know, as soon as I release my book, I went on her podcast as a guest. And after the call got over, and he called me back saying, hey, I want to discuss a business opportunity with you. And she came up with this idea of providing publishing services like doing book covers, doing the editing and formatting and all that for people who are authors basically, and you don’t know the other side of publishing. So because I had that experience with me, and Annie herself is an author. She does a lot of Kindle. Sorry, she does. She writes fiction books. So and I am from the nonfiction background. So she said we could make good business partners and I thought that idea was excellent because it has nothing to do with where is she from or how well I know her because it was a very strategic alliance. She has her skill sets and I have Mine and, you know, if we could merge it together, it could be a great business. And now we have started this website called publish my book today, where we are helping out authors like us who are in, you know, passionate about writing, but who need assistance in the other aspects of publishing. So I think it really is wonderful. The power of the internet is helping us connect with so many people globally. So I think we should just make the best use of that.
David Ralph [23:24]
Oh, absolutely. I say that to everyone get get you. I’ve never used Skype. Once. Before I did this show. The very first recording I did was the first time I’d ever use Skype. Now I think to myself, how can you survive without it? It’s amazing that you can do these kind of calls, you can record them, it doesn’t cost you anything. And you can teach so many people and you can literally blast your words into other people’s ears at a rate of knots that you just wouldn’t be able to do with a brick and mortar business, would you?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [23:54]
Absolutely. I think that’s the beauty of, you know, being online that you can actually get your message or, you know your knowledge across through various platforms, be it podcasts, or blogs or videos or not creating any kind of content and just make making it available for anybody from any part of the world. I think that’s the, that’s what people should capitalise on they should take advantage of this technology. And the best part is, it’s all free. You just need to have a laptop and an internet connection, which I’m sure most people have. So I think that’s what actually took my life to the next level. Because when I started writing my book, job escape plan, my only focus was to make sure that a lot of people get to read this book. And I was a first time author and nobody knew me. So the very first thing I did was to set up a blog and I started posting some posts and all that but then I thought that why should I just depend on my audience? I can just reach out to many more people if I bring in some people who are already influencers in their own right. So I interviewed seven different people. We’re doing seven different platforms on the internet. And they were all very happy to join me. And like you, that was the first time and I went on Skype and interviewed all of them. And that was a great experience, because they were all happy to share their knowledge. And they shared my book with their audience. And that’s one of the main reasons why my book hit the bestseller charts. So I think anything can happen if we use the internet well,
David Ralph [25:21]
and it is a very good book, I’ve actually read this and I, it’s quite quick read, you can either spend a lot of time doing the exercises after each chapter, which I would recommend. I am already past that point because I’ve actually escaped my job anyway. So I kind of read it in one sitting really, but I found it really touched on it. It’s one of those things Jelena that when you before you do it, you can’t quite see but these books are absolutely spot on. And there’s loads of them. But it’s once you’ve gone past that point, and you look back and you read them, you kind of go, yeah, this is absolutely true. This is how you do it. But there’s a big difference. We know it was a good book and you’ve got some pretty a listers I remember you sort of interviewing john Lee Dumas and stuff on the podcasting world and stuff. How did you reach out to these guys and say to them, I’m an unpublished author, this is my first go at it. Come on, give me some of your time. How did you do that? Because that is a big mindset shift as well to be able to overcome those kind of things.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [26:20]
Right. Let me share the secrets with you, David. Well, what I did was as soon as I had this idea,

you know that gels now I didn’t want to say that but you never asked me.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [26:30]
Oh, but there’s always a second book, David. As long

as I’m number one in a second. That’s all right.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [26:38]
So what I did was, I had this idea, but I was pretty shy and scared. And I was worried if these people would accept. So I just bounced this idea to my accountability partner. He is he is a person who lives in New Zealand. So again, you know the way we connect over the internet and he is a financial advisor in New Zealand. His name is Steven He told me that what is stopping you just send out an email to them. The worst scenario would be that you will not get an email reply or they would say no, so you’ve got nothing to lose. So then I made a list of all the people in the various platforms that I had in my book, like blog for blogging, I spoke to Nick Loper for podcasting, john Lee Dumas. For Kindle publishing, I spoke to Steve Scott. So all these guys was so nice to meet you. Because the in the email I just mentioned that this is the purpose of the book, the book is going to help people who are stuck in the wrong jobs. And what I did was to make sure that it’s a real book I designed the cover even before I completed the book. So I designed a nice looking cover and I attached the cover saying this is how the book is going to look when it gets published. And it would be wonderful if you could just spend you know a few minutes over over a call. If you’re not available over a call. I’m also okay if it’s an if it’s going to be an email interview. But luckily all these seven guys accepted my invitation and they came on a Skype call and I did a video recording with all of them. And I I also Send the video to all the people who’ve signed up for the book. So I think that was very nice of people, because all these guys are people who want to help others in the world, you know, in whatever they do. So that’s the reason why most of them accepted. So I think if you if you’re taking up a big project, and you want some influencers to be supporting your project, you just should not think twice, just reach out to them. And most most people would be glad to help you out.
David Ralph [28:25]
I think you’re absolutely right. And I think that has become more of a more powerful really, as we move on into this internet world that we’ve got, because so many people are ahead of the curve, but it doesn’t take them a lot to just sort of reach out with an email or a voicemail or whatever to share sort of wisdom with you. And I certainly when I created this show, I had 40 people lined up to come on a show, when I hadn’t even recorded the first episode. It was a totally, it was a dream in my head. But I went through to them with my dream. And they came back and said, yeah, that Sounds good to me. That’s doober. And I still look back on it now. And I still have that kind of mindset of why did they do that? Even though now I know that’s the word of world. That is what people do. And the powerful, influential people, online and offline, are really open and willing to give back to you. And it’s a great way of speeding things up in your own business, isn’t it by reaching out?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [29:24]
Absolutely. I think what you the point you’ve made is very true. Most people just want to help in any way they can. So it’s important to reach out. And another point is that instead of just reaching out, I mean, instead of just sending a message out of the blue, like the way I sent you, that was not a great way of reaching out, but then it’s good to follow these people for some time, read their blogs, read their books, or probably you know, if, if it’s in your niche, it’s good to sign up for some courses so that you build relationships with people, that also helps in the long run. So it’s very important because now we are in the world. real world we can meet people face to face, it’s important to build relationships over the internet by just, you know, commenting on their blogs, you know, you can do simple things like that. So

My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him. And so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant. And when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. And our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.

Wow, that was a wonderful message. Thanks for playing that, David. I think that’s the message that I will at this point of time want to tell my daughter as well as everybody else in the world who was just thinking twice before doing what they love doing.

So when you was an employee and you were sitting in employee land, planning your job escape plan, do you remember thinking to yourself, this isn’t me? How did I get into this? What can I do to get out or were you just happy plodding along?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [31:34]
I’m actually, David for all my life. I think that’s how it is. It’s in my country, or I’m not sure if it’s the same way in the UK, but we were trained to, you know, do well in our school, get good grades, get into a good college so that you get a good job. And you know, that’s how life goes. And I was also planning it that way I never wanted I never had the option of becoming an entrepreneur because nobody in my life He was doing any kind of business, everybody was employees. And I thought that’s the right way. And I luckily started well did my graduation and then did an MBA and got into a retail company as a management trainee. So everybody around me was happy. And even I thought this is the best thing to do. But when I started working, I realised that I could be doing a lot more what I mean, what the hell I was doing here is the kind of question I would ask myself very often, so. But I didn’t know that there could be a way out for me, the only way out was to take up another job at another company. So within five years, that changed three jobs. So every time I changed my job, I was thinking that this is going to be the perfect thing in my life. But within six months, I would realise that this is not what I’m supposed to be doing. So then I decided to just take a break in my last job. You know, I had a tough boss and it was I was getting stuck because if I had to grow in my career, if they had to promote me, they would ask me to keep travelling I hated travelling. So I wanted a job where I could just sit in my own city and work. And that was not happening. So I just quit to, to be my to just be at home and think what to do next. So that one month of taking a break really helped me because I sat down and I started writing down all the things I wanted to do in life. I wrote down my goals for the very first time in my life, I did a vision board and I started asking my friends about their opinion of what they think I’m good at. So when people started telling me all that I realised that I had a lot of skills which I never used all these years. People said, I’m good at networking, I’m good at connecting with people and all that so that really motivated me to become an entrepreneur and start something on my own and see whether it will work. So even when I started, I was not very sure they would I was I was having a backup plan. I had some five different job offers enhanced so if my business wouldn’t work, I can always become an employee again. But six months into starting my business, I realised that no other company My workflow is going to give me this kind of freedom. So I then decided never to look back
David Ralph [34:06]
is freedom isn’t it? It totally is, when you start off as I keep on sort of mentioning in this episode and other episodes is a hell of a lot of work and whatever you think that you’re going to be doing to build a business, multiply it by three, probably and that is a sort of effort you have to put in. But once it starts finding its feet, a lot of the effort starts taking care of itself. And it’s that thing about pushing a boulder. pushing a boulder is really, really hard. But once it starts moving and rolling, you can push it with one finger. And I certainly find a lot of that with my show. And I know most entrepreneurs I’ve been on the show will say the same thing. But that is why you’ve got to touch into the thing that you’re going to love because that boulder is going to be twice as heavy if you’re pushing something just for the money. So if we look back, Joseph are they fairly young you the real young one because I’m always fascinated about joining up your dots which you have been the kind of girl who was eager to have gone into those careers that you first went into the six and seven year old, what would that that young version of you like to have done?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [35:12]
Um, when I was six or seven years old,
I’m sure I would have chosen to take up a much more creative kind of a profession rather than, you know, selling t shirts at a retail store. So I’m sure a six or seven year old me would really want to become a dancer, probably because I was good at dancing and somehow I never pursued it when I became an adult. So I think I would have taken something much more creative than, you know, taking up a nine to five job for sure.
David Ralph [35:43]
So the essence of what you’re doing now the creativity, the playful element, building things that touches more into the younger version, van, the kind of young adult version that we all become.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [35:55]
Kids. That’s very true. I think as kids, we naturally know what we Want to do? It’s just that the people around us in the society, they conditioned us to think in a certain way, and that deviates us from what we are meant to do in this world.
David Ralph [36:09]
So how do we break free from this? Because this is the million dollar question. And when we started the show, I kind of thought it was a UK issue. But now it’s a global issue. We are small children, and we love doing something. And it’s great fun, and it’s all right. People allow us to do that, because we’re children, then we go into the education system, and people spend all their time saying, that won’t make you money. That’s not going to be a job, which now especially with the online environment, literally anything can be a job, but it’s there’s some bizarre things out there but people are making a lot of money from and their love. They love doing it. So how do we break free from that conditioning that other people are telling us what they believe is right, to the point that we don’t actually know what we think is right.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [36:57]
Hmm, I think David I would tell the message that ensure that your kids don’t go to schools where they are conditioned to just keep studying and get good grades, because that’s not going to take them anywhere. So at best, they will be a good employee, but they may not be happy human beings. So, for parents, that would be my advice that if you can homeschool your kid, that’s something amazing. But that involves a lot of commitment from parents. But the second best option would be to go for alternate kinds of schools, which I’m sure is coming up in every city now, because of the realisation that parents have that, you know, they didn’t have the best childhood. So we should start schools that are different. So I would that’s the advice I would give to parents. But if you’re an adult and you’re already in a job, then I think the only advice I would give to people is look out Look around you. You will find a lot of entrepreneurs who are doing extremely well. Get it Get yourself a mentor or at least surround yourself with positive people who will help you, you know, to just take the first step and I think for employees have the biggest advice I would tell them is it could be quite scary for you to become an entrepreneur because from the very first month, you may not be able to earn as much as you’re earning as an employee. And that’s the primary reason why I’m telling in my book as well, that you don’t have to quit your job. First start an online business, or at least start a website and make sure your voices out there, figure out what kind of services or products you can sell online. And once that business starts picking up, once you start seeing money coming from that, then you can comfortably quit your job so that I think that’s what is the beauty of the internet that you don’t have to really invest thousands of dollars. You don’t need employees, you don’t need an office space to start your business. So start while you’re an employee. And then once it grows, you can always quit to become a full time entrepreneur
David Ralph [38:43]
is the old slide of faith, we call it not a leap of faith is the slide where over a period of time you work towards something and as you quite rightly said, being online, you can start something with a very cheap domain and you can build it and you can still do your own job when I quit. My nine to five gig, I knew that I didn’t have enough money to be able to survive doing this show because it was going to take a while for the money to come in. So I just take another job and it was on three days a week, and I was doing that. Did I want to do it? No. What I wanted to do was go straight from that first job. I didn’t like into this one that I love doing. But it’s not. It’s not possible. You can’t do that. I don’t know many people that go from A to B in a perfectly straight line. It is that that wiggly career and you seen that yourself with all those chocolate franchises? How much of that chocolate did you actually end up eating yourself? And and not say
Jyotsna Ramachandran [39:35]
I did put on three to four kilos of weight?
David Ralph [39:39]
Because that’s gonna be a big problem, isn’t it? Yeah, ladies love chocolate.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [39:45]
Yeah, all right. Great. I think, David, you too have made a very wise decision of not taking up another job till the time your podcast grows. I think that’s brilliant. And I think that’s the way everybody should move because it’s going to be impossible. To think of your passion, when you don’t have money to pay your bills, so I think that has to be sorted out first. But if you if you just focus on that, then you’re going to waste many years of your life. So it’s better to balance both. I would really suggest that people should get up early, because that would give them additional one or two hours of time to focus on their side hustle while they are still an employee. So just make sure you get give yourself that extra time and work on that.
David Ralph [40:26]
Yeah. And when you find your thing, listeners, it won’t feel like an early morning when you’re getting up to do a job. But you don’t want to do God you don’t want that alarm to go off. But when you love something, you you bound out a bit and it’s great. You You run up to your office or wherever you want to go. And if you listen to all the episodes, you will find that people get up early, and they get up early. Not because they particularly want to, but it’s because they’re driven to it’s it’s bigger than wanting isn’t it?

So what I’m gonna do now because I want to talk about power publish my book today, your new platform at the end of the show to really give the listeners an understanding of what you’re presenting to the world. I’m going to play the theme of the show. And these are the words that Steve Jobs said back in 2005, and are so hugely powerful, even today. So I’m going to play these words. And then we’re going to ask that question that we ask all our guests. What is your big.in life?
Steve Jobs [41:22]
This is Steve Jobs. Of course, it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards 10 years later. Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well worn path and that will make all the difference.
David Ralph [41:59]
So what did You trust in as Steve was saying, you got to trust in something. Where did you find your belief to push through?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [42:08]
Um, oh, my biggest support system has has has always been my husband, David have known him for many years. So he kept saying that, don’t worry, I’m sure you’re going to find your place very soon. So don’t give up. Just keep doing what you’re doing. When the time is right, you everything will fall into place. So because of his support. Now, when I look back at all the jobs and all the educational things that, you know, the college and everything that I’ve done, if everything is falling in place right now, and I’m able to join the dots, because without all that, I wouldn’t realise the value of the freedom that I’m enjoying today. And I wouldn’t be driven to help so many people are too big to become entrepreneurs from home. So I think that’s where everything that I’ve done has, I can see that they were all they all had a purpose, to teach me the right lessons to be on my own and so that I can pay back to the Universe by helping a lot More people do the same thing.
David Ralph [43:01]
So you do believe that no experience is wasted. Even if you’re in a position, you’re doing a job that you don’t like, and you can’t see how it’s going to get you to the dream. When you look back, you can go Oh, yeah, okay. 90% of it might have been rubbish, but 10% that helped me move on.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [43:19]
Exactly. I think every experience in life good or bad, comes up comes with a set of lessons that we need to learn at that point so that we can grow to the next level. So nothing is wasted ever.
David Ralph [43:32]
So what is your big.in life? If you look back over everything? What was the moment or the incident where you think yeah, that really was when I decided that this is where I was going to go. That’s when things came together to move me to the next point.
Jyotsna Ramachandran [43:48]
Hmm, I think for me, it was the birth of my daughter because that was a huge kind of an awakening for me. I can’t be, you know, working like mad, you know, like, so many hours a day I need to have a system that will give me the freedom. So I think that moment was very crucial when I could see that, you know, my daughter needed my time and I was talking to clients. So that was a very powerful moment in my life where I decided that I need to have a passive income stream. So that I would say was the.in the line?
David Ralph [44:25]
Do you know, I knew you were gonna say that. I actually said that in the introduction. And it is quite evident when you see people who and we most of us all have children in our lives at some point rapa. But that is such a wake up call, isn’t it that you look at these little people and you think I don’t want them to end up working in offices, but they don’t like I want them to be dancers. I want them to be lion timers or whatever. I want them to have the kick ass life I never had. And it seems to me that that seems to be the biggest wake up call that we all have. When these little people come into our world. We can Yeah, I’ve screwed up part of my life, but it’s not gonna happen to them. This is my legacy. They’re gonna see mum working from the computer, being able to push me in the park in the afternoon. And think, well, that’s the way life is I don’t actually have to follow through. Do you think more now than ever, where we are actually breaking free from that? That issue that I spoke about earlier? But we’re so programmed to follow the route that other people are saying, Do you think now with the internet with people like yourself with people like Annie Alexander, doing their own thing? Their children are gonna go well, this is the norm, why wouldn’t I do anything other than do what me mum and dad are doing?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [45:39]
Yeah, I think times are changing and they’re changing very fast. Because I can see so many people like me who are breaking free from the traditional, the conventional things that their grandparents were doing. So I think that’s wonderful. And I would really give a lot of credit to the internet because now we are we’re exposed. So to New Age kind of thinking where, you know, we are able to connect with so many people, so many like minded people who are helping us to come out of our, you know, what do you call that? The old school kind of mentality. So I think that’s wonderful and I can really see the difference in in our generation now that we want our children to have better lives. Of course, all parents want their children to have great lives, but they programming them to be leading their life in a certain way. Whereas I think parents now are just leaving it totally open to their kids to choose what can whatever kind of life they want, and just have a ball. So I think that a change in mentality is happening very fast.
David Ralph [46:43]
Yeah, that’s that’s the message kids enjoy life. Don’t live at home forever in a day because you know, as parents, we want you to move out at some stage, but have a good time while you’re doing it. Just just go out there and live life and enjoy yourself and if it means doing things on your own terms, though. on your own terms, don’t worry about what anyone else is saying. You can say that David Ralph and Jyotsna on Join Up Dots has told you that you can do what you want, and everybody else can go to hell on that. So just before we send you back in time on the Sermon on the mic, tell us about publish my book today for everybody out there that’s thinking of starting their own publishing business or changing their life, what can they get from this?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [47:26]
Um, I think writers should really focus their time in writing great books. So we have been talking to a lot of authors like us, and we realised that they actually end up spending a lot of time worrying about the quality of their book cover and, you know, getting into the nitty gritties of how to edit their book and how to format it so that it looks good on Kindle. And I think instead of wasting their time doing all that they should focus on their next book, and then the next and build their business. So this is one huge gap which we found where people have to look for different things. For freelancers to do different kinds of things for their book, you know, to set up a website, you need to get a web designer, if you want an audiobook to be recorded, you have to look for a narrator. So people end up wasting a lot of precious time and doing that. And that’s why we created published my book today, where it’s a one stop solution where people can just list out all the services that they need for their book. And we would our team of freelancers would, you know, deliver all that they need, and they don’t have to talk to multiple people, we have a manager for every client, and the manager would coordinate all this and ensure that the clients get the end result. So that really saves a lot of time. And this is the offering that we have just put together and our website is published my book dot today, so authors would love it and they can just go and check it out.
David Ralph [48:48]
And the brilliant thing about this is yes, it’s your business. Yes, it’s your idea, but you’re not sitting on the phone 24 hours a day. You are strategically building businesses to operate With you, not there, aren’t you?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [49:02]
Exactly. Otherwise, I would go back to my employee days, you know, doing all the phone calls. So we want to serve our clients in the best possible way. But that doesn’t necessarily have to be me or Annie talking to every client. So we have a couple of virtual assistants who will be doing the work and they will be coordinating with specialists who are designers and writers and editors. So we have that team in place, and they will be taking care of all the requirements of authors.
David Ralph [49:27]
So how do you how do you structure this bow? How do you structure this when it’s a fledgling business? How do you hire employees, when the business isn’t actually making money? Right at the very first stage, is that just is that your leap of faith?
Jyotsna Ramachandran [49:42]
Ah, no, that question is quite valid because I have made the mistake of hiring too many people in my previous businesses and and then you know, all the income that I would get would go away and staff salaries. So now what I believe in that is that you pay people for exactly that. amount of work that they do, and not for the number of hours they’ve worked. So that’s something which I strongly believe in. And that’s the reason why we have not hired any full time employee for our businesses. I don’t have any employees anymore. So I believe that don’t be anybody’s employee and don’t hire too many employees. So I what we have done is we have a method to track the amount of work all our freelancers and virtual assistants do. And at the end of the month, we would see, based on the agreed rates, how much have they worked, and we would just calculate based on that and make the payment so if they’ve worked for so much, I’m sure we would have got that much business so that we can pay them so it’s a win win situation for all of us. So we don’t have to shell out too much from our pocket. And our our virtual assistants and freelancers get the money that they deserve to. So I think that’s how we have structured this business.
David Ralph [50:49]
I think it’s brilliant, and I’m sitting there listening to you scribbling down I think there’s loads of ideas in there and I I really do think listeners that this whole episode has been showered with with Get some gold. Don’t worry about the examination that’s there tomorrow, I’m sure you’re going to do well. You need not be the first in class all the time. Yeah, you may upset your mom and dad, but they will understand. At the end of the day, they want you to be happy. They think that they you will be happy if you come first in class, and if you later get a good job, but they will ultimately be happy if you’re happy. So don’t worry about upsetting your mom or dad, they will love you anyway. So just enjoy yourself. Have lots, lots of fun time with your friends and start looking for the things that you enjoy doing. If you like dancing, ask your mom to put you in a dance class. So don’t worry about all the time being first in class and you know, it’s okay to watch a little bit of TV. Your mom is not gonna shout at you. So just keep smiling and be happy child.
