Finding Meaning In life And Other Questions
Finding meaning in life is the undercurrent for todays episode of Join Up Dots business podcast.
We will be answering some questions from listeners across the world who have dropped us a line asking for help in their businesses and life.
One thing for sure is nobody can get success in their lives if they do not focus in on personal and business balance.
Now we aren’t talking about the classic work life balance myth, whereby everything sits in a neat little area and doesn’t over power anything else.
No, believe me when I say that work life balance is a complete myth as at its core it doesn’t make sense.
We have one life and have to lead it in a way that by the end of the day everything that we wanted to achieve gets done.
Business is just part of our life, so how can we separate it and make it seem like its something separate – it’s own entity.
We cant and its madness.
But what we can do is say that we are going to look after ourselves, physically, spiritually and mentally before we ever start tackling the income production side of things.
But before that lets start looking at some of the questions that we have received this week from listeners and do our best to give them the depth that they need.
And of course you can listen to the show for all the reasons.
Listener Question One:
Dear David as a long time listener of the show, i feel I’m now ready to start creating something online and making a go off it.
Just a quick question, I have been reading a lot about domain names, and choosing ones that have traffic already.
However these always seem to be very expensive to purchase.
Do you think that i need to spend thousands on a name or can i just build traffic around it? Best wishes Karl Cotton, Oak Creek Village, AZ
Listener Question Two:
Hi David, i am trying to get a side hustle off the ground, but i find when i get home after my days work i am exhausted and dont feel like doing it.
You seem to have mastered the ability to juggle many different things, so what am i doing wrong?
I need some of the Ralph spunk to get me fired up. Carol Burnell, Bradford, PA
Listener Question Three:
Hi David, i have heard you talk about your car spares business and I went and checked it out.
Ill be honest its not a particularly attractive website, is there a reason for this?
I am building a business around dog walking for busy owners and I think i am trapped trying to make things pretty, against getting customers.
I would love to know your point of view on this.
Thank you so much Andresta Combine, Lambayequ Peru
Listener Question Four:
David, i have been listening to Join Up Dots since the early days and I can definitely hear a change in the content you are providing.
You seem to bring us more into your personal issues and problems than ever before.
I am very grateful for this reality check and i feel it gives an extra depth to the show.
However, do you feel comfortable doing this, as I have thought about doing a personal health blog and im not sure i could be so open and honest.
Any feedback either on the show or by this email would be amazing. Thank you so much Jenny Jung

David Ralph [0:43]
Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning.
It’s a great day to be alive. It really is. It really is.
And hopefully you are all feeling exactly the same way.
Well, today, today’s episode of Join Up Dots, it’s going to be an answering some questions from listeners type of show.
Yeah, across the world. My listeners, my sexy listeners, the ones that just so much better looking and positive and motivated and, and just gorgeous.
They have dropped us a line asking for help in their businesses in life. I’m one thing for sure.
And one of the things I think about crap really, and I’ve really, really sort of realised this recently is you don’t get success in your life, if you don’t focus in on personal and business balance. Now, we’re not talking about what they call about work life balance.
That’s a complete myth, whereby everything sits in a neat little area and just doesn’t overpower anything else.
Because it just doesn’t exist. Because it’s like saying, you’ve got a life, and then you’ve got work. Well work is your life. And so how do you sort of sort that out? You can’t It doesn’t make sense.
We have one life. And we have to lead it in a way that by the end of the day, everything that we’ve wanted to achieve, has got diamond business is just part of our lives. So how can we separate it and make it seem like it’s something separate?
It’s Oh, no, we can’t, it is madness. But on the other side of the fence, what we can do is say that we’re going to look after ourselves physically, spiritually, and mentally, whichever way you want to go about it, before we ever start tackling the income production side of things.
And when we feel a bit tired, we say that’s enough. That’s enough business and income production. I’m off, I’m off, I’m gonna go for a walk, I’m gonna go off and do something else.
Now it’s February when I’m recording this. And yesterday, I mowed my lawns for the first time, which is really early on the United Kingdom.
And I was doing a bit of work. And then I felt need to do a break. So I went through a power walk through the countryside with my wife, my wife started this new thing called on the couch to five K.
And previously, she was on the couch to the kitchen and back to the couch again.
But she’s changed, she’s changed. And so yesterday, I was sort of following her around and she puts these headphones on, and there’s an app through the BBC, that you can download a voice and I don’t know what it says because I wasn’t allowed to listen to it. But along the lines of right back out, get moving, because suddenly she would burst into life and start sort of and she’s, she’s she’s gorgeous. She’s sexy, she’s everything.
But she wants to get even sexier so she can be even more of my placing. And she would just sell suddenly, she’d go running down the road. And then she’d sort of walk around in a circle and stuff and then she’d keep on going again. Why am I telling you this? I don’t know. It’s just popped into my head.
There must be a reason. Oh, yes, yes, that’s why I call myself a professional podcaster. So yesterday morning, I thought to myself bit tired we were I go off and do that. And then I came back and did a bit more work. And then I felt a bit tired.
So I thought I’m gonna come and mow lawns and get that sorted. And it was just looking after myself, physically and mentally and when I’m tired taking a break, but you can’t you can’t do that in life because life is just life. And so anyhow, so that’s what we are trying to do in Join Up Dots. It’d be more separate information about gaining that success but while keeping you sexy and gorgeous and just lovely.
Now before we start, I’m a bit amiss of this is where Miss or miss any way of saying thank you to people that have dropped podcast with us into iTunes.
It makes such a big difference. It really does. And I get quite a lot from the United States love you United States people. I’m going to give you a round of applause because you’re gorgeous. The United States
United Kingdom United Kingdom, no one ever gives me a review.
I haven’t had one but ages and ages and ages and there must be people out there, they could spend 30 seconds or two because it really does push you up the ranks. So I do want to say thank you to the happiness recipe from United States.
Energetic education fun and inspiring David shows a reliable source of awesome thoughtful content, which is delivered with intelligence, curiosity and humour. And Ben sees this from the United States valuable insights and more.
David has a great thing going here the ideas and insights of his guest along with his enthusiasm, but by people who may be stuck in place a great vehicle to get out of their own way. It’s a bit longer than that. And then what do accountants wrestlers and Cheyenne D’s have in common?
Yeah, Shandy, little bit of beer, a little bit of lemonade. Perfect, perfect drink on a hot day. And that is from Lisa to from the United States.
It’s all stop, you explore on Join Up Dots while being business entertained. And let’s face it, if you’re an American, you love listening to the voice of a Brit. That’s me, that’s me, you know, I use it. I use this superpower to to migrate the world just being doubly attractive because of my Brit voice.
David brings charm life lessons and laughs as the perfect way to learn about yourself and your business.
There we go. There we go. It’s learning about yourself and your business. You see what it’s all about nowadays, and I’ve converted myself to looking after myself, which I never used to do.
And you know that because you will have heard content going back? Right. Okay, so let’s have a look.
We’ve got four questions, we got four questions that have been sent to us on email, you can go over to Join Up dots@gmail.com
You don’t even have to go across. You just type that in, where you’re sitting on your little email and send a question through to us, you know, how easy is that you don’t even have to get off your backside you just reach out and you start typing in bang, Join Up dots@gmail.com and it will come through to me.
Okay, so this one is from Carl cotton from Oak Creek village in Arizona, AZ. Arizona.
Dear David, as a longtime listener of the show, I fell I’m now ready to start creating something online, making a go of it. Just a quick question. I’ve been reading a lot about domain names and choosing ones that have traffic already. However, these always seem to be very expensive to purchase.
Do you think that I need to spend 1000s on a name? Or can I just build traffic around it?
Now this is a really good question. Because if you go back in time to Join Up Dots, I have juggled with this now.
There’s two ways of looking at domain name there’s I have a one that is a conduit to the premise and the integrity and honesty of your website. So when somebody looks at the domain name, I understand it perfectly. So a client of mine a lovely lady called Amanda Regan, who works with aliens and area 51. And, and really sort of clever, she she’s too clever to work with me anyway, she’s got a website that we decided to have www dot your perfect cv.com.
And we we’ve done that. And we’ve launched it, the website’s a complete mess. We’re not getting sort of any further on but at the moment because we’re doing some other stuff. And she’s already getting hundreds and hundreds of people a month.
And that’s really through the work that we’re doing on sort of keyword content and her URL. So in that regard, it’s great.
Now, that was that was a cheap one that worked out perfectly. And what we did, we looked at somebody else’s website, and I had my perfect CV calm. And I just thought why Okay, other people might go, What is that, and then type it in wrong, and then find her.
And it seems to be that way.
So your perfect cv.com works perfectly. And that was quite cheap.
Now, the beauty of that domain name is it says what it does, it says what it does on the tin, as we say in the United Kingdom, where you know that you’re gonna get a perfect cv.com in the story. Now, if you look at something like Join Up Dots, makes no sense at all. It really doesn’t.
But it makes a lot of sense once you actually listen to the show. And so I get about 100,000 just up and down round about 100,000 a month listeners to the show. And if you go over to iTunes and stuff I call my show, online business coaching with Join Up Dots because people can find it easier by typing in online business coaching, Ban a word Join Up Dots.
Now if you come over to the website, Google Of course it is Join Up dots.com.
Now that’s not going to bring me any traffic in itself, but it’s an understanding of what the show is about. And the fact that everything connects when you start taking action and when you move forward and you have bad times you move past me to get up and go furloughs bad times, I’m a better person now for it. When you had good times, you can sort of move on.
But you only get the good times because more often than not, you’ve been through the bad times. It’s Join Up Dots. As, as Steve Jobs says, you know, looking back, you can only connect the dots by seeing where you got whatever he says is amazing.
I’ve listened to it, or 100,000 times still can’t tell you what it says.
But the essence is, you Join Up Dots by taking action, you’ve got faith, and you’ve got karma, you’ll get somewhere so in answer to your question, Kolkata, I don’t think to buy a very expensive one. I don’t think nowadays you have to have a.com you can have one it’s like I’ve just bought a company that I’ve started called www dot Evie charges dot Pro. Now, Evie charges.com was about 2000 pounds. Evie charges dot Pro is a lot less. And there is a connection with smaller URLs working better. And they reckon anything under 10 digits. So what is that? A Vc haitch ARGRS as 10 as an eBay charges.com dot pro works much better.
And it’s more memorable as well, you know, you don’t want too long. So, in answer to your question to summarise in a more clear and concise way.
I don’t think it matters if you can find one, but you already know is getting traffic bang, great jump on it. If you’re working in a localised area, you can win the market quite easily just by doing SEO and local search.
And so it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter really, you can go either way, depending on your business, but I would always try and get one that tells the visitor instantly what it is that you do the perfect pi.com you know something like that something where they look at it go it’s gonna be perfect pi. Brilliant. Go on to there.
Okay. So thank you, Carl, thank you very much for dropping us a line really appreciate that.
As I say you can go to Join Up dots@gmail.com and just drop a line just do it from your email, send it through to us. We are waiting well we’re like we’re like a personal helpline we’re sitting there with like Samaritans we’re like the Samaritans were sitting there 24 seven taking your calls is all free of charge.
You get this content What more do one right okay listener to where’s this one? Carol Burnett from Bradford? pencil, Pennsylvania, pa Pennsylvania Schumer’s?
Hi, David. I’m trying to get a side hustle off the ground. But I find when I get home after my day’s work, I am exhausted she says and don’t feel like doing it.
You seem to have mastered the ability to juggle many different things. So what am I doing wrong?
I need some of the route spunk. I own Carol Carol ion? I need some of the RAF spunk to get me fired up. I’m sure you do. I’m sure you do. Now I know. That means something different in America.
But over here, over here. I’ve got standards, Carol. And if you’re if you’re kind, I send you some I send you some when the wife’s not looking, I’ll send you some and keep it in your fridge because it will go off quickly. Right. Okay. And he’s going to get me fired up. I’m so taken by that. I can’t remember what the question was now.
I’m trying to get a side hustle. Oh, yeah. When you get home, you’re exhausted and don’t feel like doing it?
Well, one of the things that I think on this is if you are exhausted, more often than not, it’s not the right business for you. I think that you can always find time to do the things that you love doing.
And you’re never ever tired. You can come home you can be really Oh, can’t be bothered to do something.
And then somebody finds out says you fancy a pint ego Yeah, go on, then I’ll come down Japan, see Ghana, see a football match events, whatever you really fancy doing. You can always find the time for it. And when you don’t really fancy it and you’re doing it for somebody else, or you’re doing it just because you think you should be doing it. Ben is doubly difficult.
It’s like Join Up Dots, Join Up Dots. Right. I’ve been doing it for coming up a decade now. And I would say, you know, there has been times as I’ve referenced, but it just became a job. And obviously, oh God, I’ve got to do another episode or you know, but more often than not, this, for me is a passion project.
And I love it. And every morning I get up and I come up to the recording studio and I decide, am I going to record a podcast episode or am I going to do something else? Or am I going to connect with clients? Am I What am I going to do but it’s all linked around there and I never really lose the energy, but Join Up Dots.
Now there’s been other things that I’ve started doing, I can’t be bothered. And so that’s one of the best things, Carol, I think if you’re feeling like you don’t feel like doing it, you know, it’s not something that potentially is right for you, okay, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. Now, the second thing is, what you need to do is basically schedule it in. So you don’t come home and you think, can’t be bothered, you come home knowing that you have to do it.
It’s like you probably come home and you have to cook dinner or you have to do well, something, you know, book it in, and go write my first day night is going to be my business night. And even though I feel tired, when I get home, it’s on the calendar, I have to do it. And I wouldn’t do more than, you know, two or three a week, save that you could do, say Sunday morning, do a couple of hours Where do a couple of evenings, but just find the time to schedule it in. And you’ll be amazed how much progress you make just in that time. As long as you keep yourself full. And you keep on using the Ralph’s spunk Yes.
To get you fired up. And don’t don’t mistake it with the the yoga or the the mayonnaise. Just Just keep it as it is. But so I would say that I would say block in time. Make sure that that’s non negotiable. Even if somebody says to you Oh, yeah, I’ve got tickets with Bruce Springsteen. Tonight go, No, I can’t. Actually I’d go. Yeah. Oh, okay. Go to that one. But everything else go. No, I can’t because I’m working on my side hustle tonight. It’s got to be done. And it’d be so much easier instead of just coming home and kind of deciding, Oh, I should do it. I can’t be bothered. Put it on the calendar and make it happen.
Right. Okay, so what have we got? Now? This is so exciting. The questions coming through. Hi, David. This is from this is from Peru, Peru, where on Paddington Bear comes from his Paddington Bear global Do people know Paddington around the world? donkeys Peru. This is from undress, combine from lamb by GQ. I’ve murdered out. I’m sure I have lamb by eco in Peru.
He says Hi, David. Well, Seamus andressa. Is that a man’s name? If I’m sorry, if I get that wrong? Hi, David. I’ve heard you talk about your caspers business. And I went and checked it out. Yeah, you can come space ethics.com I’ll be honest, it’s not a particularly attractive website.
How dare you? How dare you? Is there a reason for this? Well, there is actually I’m building a business around dog walking, but busy owners and I think I’m trapped, trying to make things pretty against getting customers. I would love to know your point of view on this. Thank you so much. Right? Okay.
Now, this is one of the issues that people have, when they’ve got a lowball business, I think it is a good idea to make it as attractive as possible. But local businesses, it’s a totally different ballgame. Now, if I can explain this. Now, I’ve said this many times over the shows. But let’s do this.
Again, when you are doing a local business, you’re not really working on desktop, you’re working on phone. So people are generally nowadays walking along the street, and they are typing in pizza near me. And they just want to find out where the pizza is, they don’t really go over to the website at all. It’s it’s null and void.
Really, they just want to know and what happens is a little map comes up on the phone, and they click it and it takes it down to a little sort of emblem. And it tells you the telephone number the opening hours. And it’s that that’s all they really want. So if you were doing a localised business, I focus in more on the words that get me found. So it might cost based business, we now get something like 300 customers land on the website a day, okay, which is huge for a local business. And of those, we’re getting about 3035 come into the shop now.
You wouldn’t expect all those people to look and come straight in. But 35 is a real good markup. If I can get to 50 a day, so only another 15. Ben, we are we’re singing from the from the highest peaks, it’s you know, it’s a really, really profitable, thriving business. Now, it wasn’t when I took over it. And so we’ve travelled the client base, it was really dying on its feet. But now as I say we get about 35 people in and why do I go over to Google Maps, and I type in a search request. A
nd it might be for example, where say, dog walking, okay, dog walking land by your cue, okay. And I want to see the competitors back turn up, first of all, and I jot them down and I jot their URLs down and I start building a sheet of all the competitors in my area. And then what I try to do is start putting in search requests to see which ones stay where they are in front of me and which ones disappear. And they will do dependent on what you’re searching for. And I start jotting bows down highlighting the competition, so I can mark them 12345, basically, and then I get down to my 234 biggest competitors in that area.
And then I start delving down into them. But you’re absolutely right, the the website is just kind of word heavy, because I’m more interested in getting people to find us on their phones and make a little journey more than I am making it look pretty. Now, if I’m building another business, you know, a health business, whatever, I would get the ugly side, sort of lower down in the structure of the website.
So it’s not visible, but it’s still doing what it needs to do. And that’s bringing in clients to the business. So think about it andressa, you’ve got your homepage, which should look pretty attractive, you should then have your what I always say tier twos, which are your packages, your services, and what they are offering, and your location based. And then we drill down and we do keyword focused pages to drive traffic into those service pages, okay. And they are, as you say, the ugly ones, but they’re the ones that can bring traffic into your business.
So by the end of the year, I’m aiming for about 60 to 70 people a day coming into the shop, which will be amazing. And I’ve done, as I say about 35, we’re touching on about 40. So it’s doubling it, and doubling it is a big ask, but it’s the way to do it. So don’t think about your website as being pretty if you’ve got too many images on there. They’re not given hooks to Google, to position yourself where people are going to be looking for you on their phones, you’ve got to be on the map.
And you’ve got to be appearing time and time again. And it’s funny that you say dog walking business, because I’ve had three or four people connect with me over the last year about dog walking for busy owners. And it’s one of the simplest businesses that you can really get up and running.
Because your competition, I’m rubbish at doing it. When you go over and look at them. You literally think there’s no way that I can’t take back clients and position myself at the top of the charts. So when somebody does a search, I’m there.
It’s just planning out. Okay. Hopefully that makes sense. And dressed up. If you want more information on that just drop us a line, you know, the email Join Up dots@gmail.com. But don’t think about pretty think about words, because words are what people type in keywords and keywords get you bound. So yeah, you’re absolutely right. cost base sex is not a pretty sight in any shape or form. But it does work. It really does. And that’s what local businesses are all about. Right. Okay, so the last question, the last question, we’ve got a David, I’ve been listening to Join Up Dots since the early days.
Thank you so much, who says Jenny Jones, and I can definitely hear a change in the content you are providing you seem to bring us more into your personal issues and problems than ever before. I’m very grateful for this reality check. And I feel it gives an extra depth to the show, however, do you feel comfortable doing this as I have thought about doing a personal health blog? And I’m not sure I could be so open and honest.
Any feedback I have on the show or by this email would be amazing. Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny john. Yeah, I’m English. So it’s not an easy thing to do. But I know it has to be done. Now, one of the things that I always say to my wife is she always says, you know, share your problems.
She says, a problem shared is a problem halved. And I always say no problem shared is a problem doubled. It just means you’ve got the problem as well. And so, as a personal man and a husband, I’m not good at sharing. Because the people that I’m sharing with, I feel it’s my duty to protect them. Okay? So they shouldn’t be having my issues.
It’s my job to take the issues off my parents and my family and my wife and my kids. Okay. Now, on the other side of the fence, the podcast, a podcast is a totally different beast. And I think it’s my job in this media to actually allow people into my life and so they’re not seduced by the fact that everything’s wonderful because sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes it isn’t, and sometimes I got crystal clarity and sometimes I haven’t got bloody clue what I’m doing next. And sometimes beings are going really well. And sometimes things aren’t. But
what it all comes down to is the ability, I suppose, of just going, somebody out there might benefit from this. Now it’s a real kind of balance, because I don’t want it to be Oh, drone, drone, drone, oh, my issues, my whatever. But I also don’t want it to be real,
Positive Motivational fluff, but it hasn’t got any depth behind it. Because you never know who’s actually listening. And gaining the content is, is with power comes great responsibility as spider man said, and I think it’s true. So there’s certain times that I’m, I’m talking about things. And I think to myself, I don’t want it to tip somebody over the edge. So I always try to share my issues with a positive spin on it, you know, it’s the yin and the yang.
Now, I’m going to say something now, which I can’t believe I’m going to say, but it’s true. So I’m going to say it. But over the last year or so, I’ve actually become Buddhist. Now, I can’t believe I’ve just said that, really, because it still seems a bit strange.
But I realised that there was a side to me that needed help. And that was the emotional, spiritual side. Now I’m not saying God and all that because because I’m not religious in any shape or form. But I knew there was something that I needed help him. And I kept on coming back to this thing called Taoism. TAO is M. And you might have heard it, Ying and Yang, were go out for the night and have a skinful and really drink heavily if you want to.
But then for two or three days, just drink water and just sort yourself out, well work really hard for a couple of days on your business and then take two or three days off. And I kept on coming back to this but the years, but I never actually grasped it and brought it into my life. And then I made a decision because I was listening to this podcast called What’s this dow all about? And you can go over to iTunes and find it out.
And they were saying the beauty of this, this principle of Buddhism is that life should be effortless. And if it’s hard, we’re banging against a closed door, instead of an open door, you’re much better off sitting back and looking around the room and thinking right?
What do I do? How do I get out of here, the easiest way possible, instead of just ploughing in and I used to plough in all the time I used to just being work, an epic effort would get me over the hill. And I was listening to this podcast and I said, the beauty of what we teach is you don’t have to go anywhere. You don’t have to buy anything, you just have to make a mental decision to bring things into your life and focus in on them. And so I felt like this is it. This is it. This is me, this is me. Now I’m going to now myself onto this. And so I have become Buddhist in principle.
And what I like to do is, I like to look for the easy way. If I feel like I’m getting a bit stressed and head up, then I focus in on the moment and think now this is stupid, and just be more aware of my emotions, and my my health and sleeping better. And it’s been a game changer. It really has. And I’m on level one, you could go to level 15. I’m on level one.
And the difference in me at this point is it’s astonishing. It really is. Now I wouldn’t preach to anybody. I’ll go out there and start delving into this. But if you want to go over to YouTube and look for a guy called George Thompson, he does tea time, Taoism, Taoism, or you can go over to what’s this Tao all about.
And they’re the two most basic down to earth ones I found because a lot of the other ones were a bit, you can imagine that some overly serious man or woman sitting on a blanket floating four feet off the ground, you know, that kind of stuff, which is what I kind of resisted for so many years. Until I just know that it’s the easy way back, make things happen. It’s the effortless, if it’s too hard. I just walk away from it.
Now, if I’m struggling on something, I look for somebody else to do it for me and I pay them and it’s just, it’s just eff off. It really is. And so, Jenny Yeah, I am trying to give more depth to the show and I am trying to share things and I know there’s gonna be people out there.
Oh my God, he’s turning into an idiot or he’s I can’t do anything about it. But I can share my personal journey. And one of the key things that I’ve found is, you can’t just make it seem that everything is amazing, because that’s not life, it really isn’t. And sometimes you have ups and you have downs. And other times you have sideways and backwards and whatever that is what life is. So thank you for saying that it gives an extra depth to the show, because I want that to happen. But I also want it to be a case of people getting going and sort of moving forward. Okay, so, Johnny, john, thank you so much, really, really appreciate that.
