Normally, you know, I will do a little bit of a preamble. But today, there’s no time to waste because our guest is a time expert. He’s also an author, speaker, researcher and performance expert, and, as I say, considered one of the leading authorities on the connection between time productivity and performance. Now it’s an absolute delight to have you on we had a little bit of an issue yesterday and so you delightedly for me got out of bed again? early to join with us. Are you somebody that sort of makes the most of your day because you make the day longer and longer? Or do you just always get going early in the morning?
Steven Griffith [3:00]
I’m what I call an early bird so you know there’s really two types early bird night owl I’m an early bird but i do i have a firm shutdown time so I can recover but I do get up early.
David Ralph [3:11]
And what is early is it stupid o clock on normal o’clock.
Steven Griffith [3:14]
It’s close to stupid o’clock. It’s about 445 o’clock Am I don’t
David Ralph [3:19]
understand that maybe it’s different in the United Kingdom because we wake up and it’s dreary and you just want to snuggle up with your wife a little bit. Well about See you in the world. I guess you’re American? Do you wake up to glorious sunshine and beaches. That’s it make it easier to get up at time?
Steven Griffith [3:36]
It does. I am. I’m a Newport, Newport Beach, California, South Los Angeles about 30 miles and I’m about a mile away from the water.
David Ralph [3:45]
So So you say easy life for you. That’s what you’re saying you get, you’re telling us you can get up at 430 in the morning. And we’re we’re thinking that you’re some kind of legend, but actually your reason to get up because you live when you do.
Steven Griffith [3:58]
And I got a reason. You know, just to make the most of my time David Absolutely.
David Ralph [4:02]
Right. Okay, so let’s talk about that. Because that is one of the five sort of pillars of join up dots that we brought in recently. One of them being time because I see most people will say, I want to change my life, but then they don’t allow themselves to gain that extra time to do it. And so effectively by don’t do anything. Do you see that in your own life and with clients that you teach? Everyone wants a transformation, but they’re not wrapping that time back to make that transformation?
Steven Griffith [4:33]
I do David it’s it’s the number one issue for people, right. So you know, how I developed a time cleanse is based on people struggling with the same excuse, I don’t have enough time. And it’s an illusion, not enough times an illusion we have, we have allowed time to be stolen from us. And we’ve allowed us to be a victim of it. So yes, that is a number one excuse for not doing being and having, I don’t have enough time.
David Ralph [4:57]
And I just say to my wife is because you didn’t want to do it. I always say to you can always find the time to go down the pub with your mates, you can always find the time to do two things that you want. But it’s when people say my kids, I didn’t have time, I don’t really want to do it that I
Steven Griffith [5:12]
know that’s it. That’s exactly it. That’s the biggest excuse. So when we say we don’t have time, or someone will say something like this David you know if my schedule allows, or if time allows I just ask people and I asked myself the same question many years ago, whose time?
David Ralph [5:28]
But what do you mean? I don’t get that. So say that again. So you ask. So
Steven Griffith [5:31]
when someone shows? Yeah, so someone says if time allows, okay, so and and I asked them well, whose time? If you’re saying if time allows whose time? Oh, I say what you are? Right. Okay. Yeah, yeah, you you are. So once we identify that we’re time and we always have been time, we eliminate that excuse. But here’s the thing, people want to walk around as a victim and have that excuse. And so what what my philosophies with the time cleanses is it is get you back in charge of your time, because time comes from you. It’s not an outside thing. It’s not something you have to fight. And we’ve got to get a new relationship with time and look at time differently. Because of the technology 24 seven world we’re connected and we can’t keep living like we did 20 years ago, this is a new day.
David Ralph [6:18]
Now I will hold my hand up and say that I am a master of time, because I have three simple principles that I build into everything I do. So I run the whole join up dots organization on my own. And it’s not too hard because I batch everything. That’s the first thing. So I only do all the same tasks at the same time and try to do a little bit here and there. I also focus in on something called Parkinson’s Law, which I’m sure you’re an expert on, Stephen. Should I expand on it? For my listeners?
Steven Griffith [6:51]
Yes, go ahead. That’d be great.
David Ralph [6:52]
Okay, Parkinson’s Law, our listeners is when you have a task, and you give yourself six days to do that task, it will take six days, the time will expand but tasks will expand into the time you’ve got given. And so if you decide to do it in half hour, generally, the quality of that task will be just as good as if you let it expand. So everything that I do, I set a clock, and I try to beat the clock. And as I say the quality is really good. And the last thing is Plato’s principle, the 8020 I only do what I need to do to make my business thrive. Does that make me a genius of time, Steven? Or am I just somebody that’s just skating over the knowledge base that you’re going to present to us?
Steven Griffith [7:35]
Well, I think those two principles you just said are absolutely on track. And one of the things that I can tell that you have that 95% of people don’t a good relationship, a great relationship with time, because your relationship with time is the most important one even more than your husband and wife.
David Ralph [7:51]
Why do we have this fame when when we’re all on this planet, and basically, the one thing that none of us know, is when we’re going to finish. So we should be on a sort of, I don’t know, a fast track to get things done.
Steven Griffith [8:06]
Exactly. But we’re in this illusion that time is endless. And our devices are keeping us distracted, stimulated and multitasking to where we’re really not being present to our lives. Most people, if you look at them are on their phone up to four hours a day. One piece of research shows that we touch swipe, lick, lick,

No problem, our phone 2600 times a day, 20 2600. Yep, touch, click, feel, look 2600 times and here’s the thing, this is what’s happening. We don’t even realize that we’re doing this. And that’s what the time cleanse does, it stops for you to look and have an awareness of where am I spending my time time when I have people go through the cleanse and look at where they’re using their time. So it’s basically a life inventory of your time. One of the categories is technology. 90% of the time, people start writing down how much time they actually spend on technology. And they’re shocked because they’re in a hypnotic trance.
David Ralph [9:18]
But I’m shocked by that, you know, the listeners will know but you probably don’t know. But I don’t have a phone or anything in my life. I’m totally PC based. So when I turn it off, I walk away. I can’t be connected. So I don’t look at anything. I have no notifications. My kids want them a lot. My wife is certainly on it a lot. keep scrolling up and down Facebook. But 2600 that seems that seems extreme. My family don’t seem as bad as I thought now.
Steven Griffith [9:49]
Yeah, it’s an epidemic. It’s an absolute epidemic.
David Ralph [9:52]
So some days, you know, you are the expert. And that’s what we’re here for join up dots to help people change their ways and push them towards the dream life that they want. So is a step by step can we can we say that that the first thing that you need to do before anything is become aware of the wastage I imagined? Would that be the first step?
Steven Griffith [10:12]
Yeah, so the first thing in the actual time cleanse, actually, which it’s, it’s one step before that is decide and commit to what you really want in your life. You know, you can’t have it all. But you can have what’s most important. So in the cleanse process, the first thing that we do is make a commitment to what what somebody really wants, what do you truly want, that can be a couple things, I suggest up to three like a personal thing. Maybe you want to get in shape for your business, spend more time with your family. So combination of personal and professional, you’ve got to determine this is what I want?
David Ralph [10:46]
And is it a case of then of building interval or because this is a problem with a lot of these changes? We see every New Year’s Eve where people go, I’m going to lose 15 pounds by the end of March. And it’s like too big to fail. Yeah, how did I decide and commit to that, and not just dwindle away after a couple of weeks.
Steven Griffith [11:08]
So the the precursor to that is then what we’ve already talked about is you know, understanding your relationship with time making a decision that time is going to be on your side, it’s an ally, and then it comes for you comes from you and you’re responsible for that’s the core underneath all the changes, and to make decisions based on your yeses and noes. And what I call David going on a time cleanse, time excuse diet. So stop using excuses of time for not doing being or habit, you’ve got to do that you got to do that immediately. Just make a commitment that time is no longer in the issue, and then invite that positive relationship. So that’s the core underneath it. But back to your question about change. We all are motivated and perform by different factors. But the first thing we have to do after we commit to something is look at every area of our life, where we spend time and how much time we spend, and that first identifies it and then we decide using the time cleanse question is this contributing or contaminating to my happiness and success everything you write down in every area, and then you address the toxins?
David Ralph [12:16]
Because I’ve kind of looking back over my life joining up my thoughts, I think I’ve left between being very focused on time and allowing time to just destroy me. And trying to juggle too many plates spinning the plates all at one time. At the moment. I’m very, very focused on my time, so I won’t allow the work to stretch out. But there’s other times when I was in corporate land, I didn’t have the option about it was kind of forced on me. So when somebody is in corporate land, and they’re listening to this podcast episode, and they’re going, you’re absolutely right, you’re absolutely right. And I’m going to bring these changes into my corporate land. But then there’s a manager throwing more and more onto them. How can
Steven Griffith [12:56]
I do it? Well, first, we need to start working from a perspective of what I call what I introduce since the world called Mindfulness title. This is a new concept, but not a new concept is based off the world of mindfulness. And mindfulness is this process of being present in the moment. So you right here, right now, when you do that, you’re totally focused, you have more cognitive ability, creative ability, you can handle stress better. And so when we work in this philosophy of time from this, we started improving the quality and experience and performance with time. So what does that mean, if you’re in corporate world, that you start being present, you’re committed to how you’re using your time. And you start using the tools to maximize that our productivity, that can shift your way of being what time so you, you are responsible for you, the corporate world is going to drive things on you. But ultimately, how you perform a time is your choice. And one of the biggest issues that we have. And it sounds like you’ve experienced this in the corporate world is what I call time, pressure. And time pressure is the killer of performance. So being present using the tools of maximize your performance during the day, and not letting time pressure get you down by the outside forces.
David Ralph [14:12]
I remember reading the four hour workweek. And by Tim Ferriss many years ago. And it wasn’t it was a life changer for me because I realized that actually, I was there for eight hours a day minimum. But actually, I only needed to be there for about three hours if I really got down and sort of cranked it out. Is this where we’re leading with your sort of platform, your time cleanse? Are we going to have a lot of dissatisfied people thinking, I’m wasting all this time, but I can’t do anything about it.
Steven Griffith [14:40]
Well, that that’s actually not the case at all. Because inside I’m going to use the corporate example because I think it’s a really good one where people feel powerless. It’s an illusion. It’s an illusion, you have all the power you need. But when you go through your corporate life, your activities and you start looking at what’s contributing to your success there, and what’s contaminating and start removing and start removing the extra conversations with you know, the negative Nelly is at the watercooler responding to every text and email within seconds. And we start modifying how we’re performing at work, we start recovering time. And so here’s the thing, if we want to work on a side, hustle or build your own business on the side, we have more time built in our day, but when we leave our day, we have more time and energy available to us. We’re not beat down by the man.
David Ralph [15:27]
Why? Okay, so basically, you’re protecting your energy at work by doing the right things. So that when you come out and you’re ready to do your own side, hustle, you’ve stored it up and you’re raring to go instead of just being battered, battered, battered for eight hours a day, and then you come back, slump on the sofa and mentor Netflix on and another day is gone.
Steven Griffith [15:48]
That’s correct. And we need to train people in our lives. One of the things in the book that I talked about is how to say no, you got to start saying notice stuff. Even at work. When I say you say no, I’m not saying that the piss off the boss would you’ve got to start understanding Jeez, how can I be more efficient? How can I help the people around me and start being in control and training people around you how you interact with time.
David Ralph [16:13]
But let’s play some words now. And then we’re going to delve back into your story to this point is Jim Carrey,
Jim Carrey [16:19]
my father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him. And so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant. And when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. And our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.
David Ralph [16:45]
Now, I always ask the question, because the guests come on to the show. And they’re obviously passionate about a new platform, a new book, I knew something. Has this always been bubbling under? Or have you Are you a convert to time did you used to be as I said in the introduction, one of these guys just running around getting exhausted by life.
Steven Griffith [17:06]
I was I would call it a combo effect. So I was both, you know, great, great work ethic, you know, great at some things, not great at other things. And over time, I realized I was getting more tired. The things that I could do when I was younger, I still couldn’t do. And that was one of the the catalyst is I started seeing the clients being affected by time, the fatigue, the stress of creating the system. But there was a point in my life where you know, I wanted to be a professional athlete, and I was an American footballer. And I had some injuries and I kept ignoring the injuries and I kept overtraining and getting past and I would get injured, I tore my hamstring playing football three times. And I tell the story for one reason is I had made a decision in my life when I was 13. And time had passed me by I had some physical injuries, and I was ignoring the fact that I was still not going to be an elite athlete. So it took me almost till I was 24 years old, after three schools and three injuries to realize I had made a decision in my life. time had passed me by, and I needed to actually shift who I was being in my beliefs. So I could actually go to the next level in my life. I mean, I had such low self esteem at the time that I thought I can only be successful being an athlete. And that’s where I wasn’t paying attention to time paying attention to what my hopes and dreams really where I wanted to be successful. And when I was 13. I said, I want to be an athlete. Well, guess what my body wasn’t saying I was going to be an athlete. And so that was a big wake up call around time. I wouldn’t realize that till much later. But these are the things that we’re doing. We are making decisions, and we’re not upgrading our thoughts and our beliefs and how it’s connected to our time.
David Ralph [18:51]
I will throw it out being devil’s advocate, that the younger version of myself wasn’t focused on time, because it stretched out forever. I was more focused on having a good Friday night chasing a few girls. And so of having the young man’s life now I’m just about to turn 50 I think to myself, bloody hell, I better keep going because I’m running out of time. Time is a big thing in my life now, Isn’t that how life should be? Shouldn’t the youngsters not be focused on what’s running out, but be focused on, you know, just living life and being mad and crazy?
Steven Griffith [19:27]
Well, I don’t think they should be focused on what’s running out. But I do think they should be focused on what matters most. And what matters most is being relevant and making a difference in the world. Even as a young man, you and me, we still wanted to have happiness and success, we’re going to have our our trials and tribulations. But ultimately, we’re all designed to make a difference to be relevant to connect to our true gifts and talents. And my belief is, let’s get connected to those as soon as we can. We don’t have to get serious, you know about everything all at once. But let’s get present to what we’re here for. And that’s the make a difference. And not just for ourselves for the collective.
David Ralph [20:02]
But when I was young, I didn’t want success at all, I just basically got a job and just floated. And I hold my hand up, I had no ambition. And if a promotion came along, I might as well go for that. And it was just whatever floated past me on the mighty stream of life, I would reach down and sort of grab but I had no desire for success at all.
Steven Griffith [20:25]
Well, did you want to be happy? I
David Ralph [20:27]
never thought about it. I never thought anything.
Steven Griffith [20:31]
But did you want to wake up happy or sad? Like that’s, that’s like, like, a fundamental truth of life. I mean, I don’t imagine you said I want to wake up and have a shitty life.
David Ralph [20:41]
No way ever woke up thinking I want to be happy. I just operated by how I felt at that time, there wasn’t any sort of prescription to it.
Steven Griffith [20:51]
Right? And I’m in this exactly it I’m helping young people and every people have a prescription. Because I can guarantee you, you did not wake up saying God, I want to have a crummy day, I want to have a shitty day you are doing things unconsciously, to have a good life. That’s what we’re designed to do. You might not have been thinking about it. I’m bringing that to consciousness, I want young people to be thinking about what does it mean for me to make a difference and be happy. And so what we’re doing so same for me, I didn’t wake up when I was 18 1920 going, Man, what am I going to do today to be happy and successful. But what I was doing was actually driving me there. I just wasn’t aware of it
David Ralph [21:28]
as interesting when you hit that, that that position in your life where all the dots join up. And I hit it with the show join up dots and it almost seemed like, as the whole mantra of the show is every experience I’ve had has led up to that moment that when I went in front of the microphone, I was ready for it. Are you in that position? Now? Do you feel like your life no matter what you’ve done has led you to this? Is this your legacy work? Or is this just a number.on? The road to where you’re heading?
Steven Griffith [21:58]
I love that question that that’s a that’s a 10 out of 10 question for me. So thank you for asking that I love the concept of your show. I do believe that is this is my legacy work. I’ve been coaching people for over 30 years. And here’s the thing, we don’t know what we don’t know. So next year, next, next two, three years, something else could become. But I can see how all the dots have connected all my failures, all my successes, how it’s all come to this point. And that’s because of just staying the course you know, when when I was flat on my back, when I had injuries, all those things, it sucked and I wasn’t perfectly navigating everything. But I do believe that if you just keep focused on that Northstar what you really want, those dots will line up and even in the darkest hour, the dots are lining up. So I do 100% agree in my life where I’m at. And the philosophy that your show and you live by is 100% right on.
David Ralph [22:54]
And when you hear those words from Jim Carrey where he says you might as well do what you love. It’s kind of true in so many ways, but it’s also for many people too big. How do you think that people out there can find that love? When it’s often the question that people struggle with the most? What do you actually love?
Steven Griffith [23:14]
Well, part of the big problem today is we’re not stopping actually even ask the question. We’re not even stopping. We’re letting the outside world tell us what’s important. Our devices are telling us what to do. I know you don’t have one that you’re around that but you turn that device on that device is picking for you. It’s choosing for you. It’s showing you the menu, it’s it’s showing you the menu, showing you the options. And so we’ve got to stop, we gotta disconnect from from our environment, the technology and just be with ourselves and start asking the question what’s really important in a and until we do that, we’re just going to let the outside world determine what we do, how we act how we believe.
David Ralph [23:55]
Right? So what I want to do I want to hold the big question that is bubbling away my brain until a little bit later. I’m not even going to tell you what the big question is. Let’s jump back on to your the time cleanse a proven system to eliminate waste of time and realize your full potential and reinvest in what matters most. Now, when I was reading the four hour workweek for Tim Ferriss, I got to myself from a position of doing eight hours a day down to doing about two hours a day. And convincing my manager I was a pitch poster boy for this to actually let me work from home and the quality of my work would be better. And everything was brilliant. And I had all this extra time. But I didn’t actually know what to do with it. So I was just sitting there sort of watching DVDs and stuff thinking to myself, this is brilliant. But there wasn’t any quality coming back into my life. How do people do that? How do people find that quality? When they’ve suddenly got that extra time? Is it just a case that you’ve got to naturally waste it until the ideas come to you?
Steven Griffith [25:00]
Well, when you get the extra time, so it goes back to the system, it’s it’s when we start the time cleanse, we’ve identified what we’re committed to. So its first being clear, gosh, what do I want to I want to lose 10 pounds. So I want to grow my business? Do I want to have more quality time with my family? So it’s already set up that we’ve identified? What is it that we want? And so when that time comes back, we start reinvesting it in very specific actions and way. So the setup of the whole system is that you get that time back for a purpose. And not to waste more of it. You know, this is a big thing that’s happening in Japan right now, I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but they changed the laws and working in Japan. So there’s a lot of corporate executives in Japan hanging out at the local 711 for two or three hours before they go home. Because they’ve got this extra time. They don’t know what to do with it. And the wives don’t want them coming home three hours early. So it’s, it’s, it’s a major issue because they don’t have a purpose with that extra time.
David Ralph [25:57]
So that’s where I went wrong vein, I just wanted to time I wanted to freedom, I think what I wanted was to control. I wanted, as I say, to claim back my life, which has led me to where I am now. But I didn’t define what I actually was using that time for.
Steven Griffith [26:12]
Right. And if we if we get extra time back, and we don’t have anything to do with it, you know, it’s like the devil’s tool right now we just we just screw off.
David Ralph [26:21]
But well, well, I do a lot. Now. I’m rest. Now rest was never a big part of my equation. I’m a hustler. I work hard. But I had burned out a couple of times. And the second time I thought, right, that’s it, I’m never doing that again. So now a lot of the time, I will just sit there and my wife will come into a room and she say what you’re doing and I go, just thinking and she say you know, are you going to turn the TV on? No, I’m just thinking might listen to a bit of music and stuff. That’s how I do it. And I’m kind of filling my time up with less, which is giving me the ideas and the template to bring into my business ready to go. Instead of just hustling, hustle, hustle and been trying to make things work, it’s given me a focus
Steven Griffith [27:05]
what your philosophy is right in line with the time plan. So the whole philosophy is work, rest, just as important. So one of the things that I coach is doing interval work. So working for a period of time and then resting, so to two time slots that I like are two setups I like one is 55 minutes with seven minutes of rest. And the other one is 25 minutes of work with five minutes of rest. So it’s like working out you do a multiple intervals 234 those and then you rest 30 minutes to 60 minutes, and then you can go back to that type of activity. But that’s a laser focused. Part of that is what you call badging. I call clustering, putting the similar activities together, shutting off notifications, work rest intervals focused on high priority tasks, and your your productivity those hours, which you’re living, two x three x five x because all hours aren’t the same. If you have an hour of multitasking, being distracted, that’s like one thing, have an hour where you’re totally focused with off your devices and off all the notifications. So what you’re doing is exactly in line with the time cleanse process, because you have to recover the recovery, what you just said there, that’s recovery and rest, allows last creativity allows you to connect what matters creates new ideas and businesses and desires. It’s absolutely important. That’s not what we’re not doing that you have to rush. So I applaud you for your intuition on that.
David Ralph [28:29]
I’m not your love child, Stephen, I think I’m gonna call you dad for the rest of the episode. That’s what I think I’m going to do. Now. What you’re saying Bo, it makes total sense, because it’s kind of common sense. You know, you don’t get a sportsman play the Super Bowl. And then the next day, he’s back at training, he has a couple of days off and then build it up again for the next week. in athletics and sports, we kind of know these rules anyway, don’t wait a sec. In life, we don’t think we operate the same way.
Steven Griffith [29:03]
You’re absolutely right. And one of the big things for me part of my recovery is meditation. Now everyone doesn’t have to meditate, you can sit quietly and just reflect that’s a form of reflection or contemplation. But I have a formal practice of meditation that I do twice a day. That’s my recovery. That’s my connecting with self. But we can do that in many ways. You know, going for a walk, we can recover, you know, sitting quietly, like you just said, and this is a big part, we’re conditioned in the west to go go go go go doo doo doo BBB. And when we we can’t keep that up.
David Ralph [29:36]
So of course we can. And one of the big things that I’m bringing into the show, as I say is time and fitness. And I think breathing and oxygen, I couldn’t meditate people kept on saying they meditate, I just couldn’t switch off my brain couldn’t do it. So I found deep breathing, which suits me because I’m getting more oxygen in. I’m invigorating myself. And I’m not going into that floating four feet off the floor with my legs crossed kind of meditation, which I couldn’t do, it just gives me a chance to reach out.
Steven Griffith [30:09]
Well, and that’s what we got to find what works for us. I mean, that’s the whole thing. And, and part of you know, my philosophy and which actually is in the time cleanse book is teaching people how to set their day up to perform. We’ve got to start thinking about performing not managing time managing time and the philosophies of that work. When our phone was connected to the wall by a cord. There’s so many distractions, stimulation and multitasking in a world that we’ve got to look at our days differently. We’ve got to work in rush in a new way.
David Ralph [30:39]
Now, I am an early person, I like getting up I don’t get up at stupid o’clock. But I get up when my body says it’s time to get up. And that’s me now what about eight o’clock at night? I’m absolutely knackered, and I’ve fallen asleep on the sofa, much to my wife’s chagrin. Now is that another way of building time into our life actually focusing in on our natural bio rhythms. And if we ever a night, our work in the night, and if we’re a lark, focusing on that side of the day,
Steven Griffith [31:10]
yes, it’s it’s a it’s a blind spot for about 99% of people. They let their environment dictate when they’re doing what what you do is important. But when you do it is just as vitally important as doing a corporate training a couple months ago, and as an executive, a financial executive. And he looked at me after I talked to section, and he said, Oh my god, I just figured it out. And I said what he said, You know, I’m a night owl. And I’ve been forcing myself because he had to get up early for the markets. He said, I’ve been forcing myself to get up at night for years, I just kept asking myself, what’s wrong with me? Why can’t I perform like, you know, my colleagues. And the simple fact is, is his circadian rhythm, his natural rhythm was where he performed at his best at 345, five o’clock in the afternoon, early evening. And so we need to know, you know, are we a night owl? Are we an early bird, and then position or tasks related to that. And so for early birds, you know, those the early part of the day, we’re going to have better cognition, we’re going to have better focus, then there’s a little bit of a dip. And then there’s a recovery, say, two, three o’clock, where we have second wind, yeah, for the night hours, it’s, it’s completely different. They don’t get started really into their flow into 123 o’clock, and each person has their individual hour. But we’ve got to know what we are. So we can put our task and maximize a performance. Wait. So once again, taking it back into the lunacy, which is corporate land, where they make everyone work from nine to five, that doesn’t matter where you are on the planet is nine to five, once again, that is madness. If you’re trying to get better workout or people I should make people work at times, that’s good for them. Absolutely. And I think we’re seeing that more with, you know, flexible hours, we’re seeing more mobile offices, if you will, where you can work for one. But if you’re in that corporate world, and you’re forced to work in a certain restricted, you know, time periods and doing certain things within your own schedule, you want to see where you need more energy, where you need less energy, or where you can have some time to recover in this best you can then adjust your workload to match that.

How to do it, if you manage it goes I’m yeah, I’m putting you on the eight o’clock shift, Stephen. And you go, Well, actually, that’s not good for me, I’m better off, you know, sleeping till lunchtime.
Steven Griffith [33:37]
Well, so two things, you make a choice, if you still want to work in that environment, which I know a lot of people you know, right now today can’t just shift that. But then you’ve just got to mentally understand that you’re designed a little differently, and just your awareness and a bunch of coffee. So your awareness of of how you operate and just know Wow, there are asking you to do certain things where you might not be 100%. And that awareness will actually adjust your performance in a better way, versus just being blind and not understanding what’s happening. But there are some constraints working in the corporate world, no doubt, and but you’ve got to do the best you can to negotiate your time effort in and activities within the system.
David Ralph [34:20]
Well, I’ve been very focused on the time on this show. And I can see that we’re running away with ourselves here. So getting back on to the time plans, we already said the first thing was the bit that I didn’t do. Well, I didn’t decide and commit to what I wanted that time for what would be the next stage.
Steven Griffith [34:37]
The next stage is really simple. You do inventory of your life, where you spend your time, and how much time and so I’ve broken it down into some simple categories to make it easy for people, technology, people places, possessions, activities, your business interactions and activities and your thoughts and emotions. So you write down what you do and how much time you do for your time life. And you get really laser focused, it’s an inventory, you’re taking a snapshot of where you spend your time, when you spend your time and how much after that you ask the time cleanse question. And we’ve talked about a little bit already. And it’s very simple. With those activities, behaviors, the people you asked this question is just contributing or contaminating to my happiness and success, that question 95% of everything on that sheet, you will instantly know you will instantly know. And if you don’t know right away, got a couple processes for that you can do the pros and cons of that interaction activity behavior. And you’ll get clear on what’s toxic.
David Ralph [35:40]
And easiest pen and pad to tell mo is there but time cleanse app.
Steven Griffith [35:45]
Right now it’s pen and paper, but the apps coming. And you know, once once you do that part, then you decide what you want to do with the toxin see we reclaim the time through the toxins. And here’s the beauty of the time cleanse, it gives you the unique option opportunity to stop become aware and ask the simple question, am I using my time in the best way and the best direction for what I want? And we’re not doing that? We’re not doing that we’re also haven’t been trained to assess is this toxic or not?
David Ralph [36:16]
And when you say toxic, you mean sort of like people that you hang out with on a Friday night down the pub, but you just do it because if it’s convenient, and they don’t actually refuel you, they just kind of drag you down. And then negativity brings you down that that kind of talks it?
Steven Griffith [36:32]
Yes, exactly. It can be people it can be activity. So if you’re on Facebook or social media for two or three hours a day, you got to ask yourself is that contributing to my happiness and success? And a lot of things David we’re just going to change the amount of time. So maybe somebody is on Facebook for two hours. And now they say well, I like Facebook, so I’m just going to reduce it. Okay, great, reduce it for an hour. And we keep it in our life. But toxic can just be too much of it or at the wrong time. Like we talked about wrong time of day. Like when my girlfriend comes to me and wants to talk about our relationship or something to do on the weekend. And my blood sugar is zero because I haven’t eaten five hours, bad time to talk to Stephen.
David Ralph [37:11]
did this all makes total sense to me. And what I like about this, it’s based around common sense is based around emotions is based around sort of self development, the thing that I always hated about time management, I used to be in corporate land, and every now and again, we would get a trainer or a coach come in to teach us doing management. And they would say right, okay, writer, or columns, A, B, C, D, and prior. And by the time they sort of gave you all these things to do after they would be over anyway. So it was just a complete waste of time. And my favorite time of management coach we ever had, should have been there Friday at nine o’clock one day, and we were all in the boardroom waiting. And Bihar pass hadn’t turned up. And so when we owned him and said, you know, you know you’re doing a course today when I’m like, Oh, is it today, or I’ve got the time wrong, which which was the most brilliant to a time management expert that I’ve ever known. But this is as I say, this is something that is more spiritual and sort of physical, isn’t it more than these kind of checklist rubbish that just don’t do David
Steven Griffith [38:20]
I love your intuition. Because that’s how I described this book, you know, I’m a very process driven guy, and I have a spiritual connection to it. I call this the best had heart time program there is in the world, it’s connecting to what you really want in life with a process a cognitive process that connects you to, you know, your ultimate purpose. There’s, there’s something that I do in the book, late in the book, and I asked people to write out what they want their legacy to be. What do you want to leave this life? When it comes to your kids, your family, the planet? How do you want to be remembered. And a lot of people think of legacy at the end of their life. And I invite everyone to look at it this way that legacy is happening right now. Now, you and I are creating a legacy right now. But what we’re doing, and once you write out what your legacy is, you get to look at am i doing that now? Am I doing that? Or am I wasting time,
David Ralph [39:12]
I’m going to play some words now from a guy who basically said that if he looked in the mirror, too many days on the chart and fo fancy what I’m doing today, he would change he was very focused on his time. Here, Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs [39:25]
Of course, it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards 10 years later. Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leaves you off the well worn path. And that will make all the difference.
David Ralph [40:01]
Listening to those words, are you 100% following your heart Is it the first time you followed your heart, it sounds like you are heart driven from a young boy onwards,
Steven Griffith [40:12]
I would say that would be the gift. Perhaps my mom instilled in me, my mom raised me and my brother on her own. And, you know, tell the story about her grit and her commitment. And it’s one of the motivations for the book, because I watched my mom, she’s still alive, work into her 70s and really not have any time for herself. And that that always crushed me as I started getting older. And so for me, I realized, you know, my mom did the best she could did an amazing job, but under the circumstances pretty much just worked her life for us. And so I made a commitment to myself to to, obviously to help her my family, but also to follow my heart and I always have and and it’s it’s been challenging at times when you have a desire to have an insight that other people aren’t following yet are not on the same page with and to keep going to keep going. And so yes, the answer is yes. And ultimately, I believe that we’ve got to wake up and just stop and just say, am I doing? Am I doing the right thing? Am I am I the captain of my ship? My the Am I the person that I want to be right now? And am I doing what I should be doing? And it’s not always easy to do that. And I’m not saying I’ve always done that. But that’s I think it’s been my guiding light and having that grit have it just keep going no matter what it always will work out. There’s a saying everything will work out in the end. And then if it’s not working out, it’s not the end.
David Ralph [41:40]
And one of the things that I find with time management experts and time cleansing experts is I actually don’t want to see them looking busy. I actually want to see them just rolling around. So when people see you and you’re sort of hovering here and hurrying, bear, did I go Oh, I thought he was supposed to be good to be selling Oh, you always aware of strolling around naturally in your sandals and your phone?
Steven Griffith [42:08]
Absolutely not. And here’s what I’m going to tell you, if you find somebody that tells you they have 100% mastered it 100% of the time, get your track shoes on and run away from them.
David Ralph [42:22]
As almost as honest as that you think that they’re just full of it?
Steven Griffith [42:27]
Well, I mean to say there’s never an issue. That’s crazy. We’re humans. Now I will tell you that for several years, I’ve lived you know, the majority of my life with zero time pressure. That doesn’t mean I don’t have stress. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have the regular worries of life. But the pressure of time is pretty much been eliminated. But there’ll be times when I’m going to be more rushed. But the key here is that that’s my drive my hustle. It’s not really driven from the fear of not having enough time. But just like anyone now i can i can get caught up into distractions. I can get caught up in the overstimulation. It doesn’t happen often. But still, I’m in it just like everyone else. And I’m continuing to evolve, continuing to learn. And you know, that’s what it’s about being a human being.

When I quit my job six years ago, and the director who owned the company said to me what you’re going to do David going forward, I said to him, I’m going to sit in the garden and look at clouds. And I knew that I had to get off the rat race. Somehow I had to sort of change it. And I hadn’t decided what I wanted to be at that stage. Being a podcast host hadn’t even dawned on me. But I knew that I needed to slow down to get more quality in my life and to stop chasing. And at that point, it was just constant by the clock over time. So that’s how I always say to people when they say to me, you know, what do you do with your time I say more often than not. I sit and look at clouds and I they want to punch me in the face I’m sure.
Steven Griffith [44:00]
Well, you said something very beautiful that I say as well slowing it down speeds up the results.
David Ralph [44:06]
He goes that’s profound, isn’t it? It’s like we know what we’re talking about Stephen there.

Yeah, yeah, we’re I don’t think you’re my my my son anymore. I think we’re brothers.

I think we Oh, yeah, you’re better looking version of me. I’m the weedy ineffective one that sits on the porch playing the banjo. you’re you’re you’re the big manly one. But so rock things. Right. Okay, so we’ve covered everything that we’ve covered, all within the necessary time. Stephen, you’ve turned 13 now, and there’s a couple of things you need to know. Not everything is going to go your way. And that’s okay. These things that show up that are challenges or you think are failures. They’re actually guideposts to help you continue to grow and be the best man that you can be. And so one of the first things I want to share with you is to let go of the worry and the doubt and fear, I know you’re going to have it, especially can let it go. Because you are going to be divinely guided, as long as you continue to go for what you want. Don’t listen to the people around you that you know, say you can’t do it or tire you’re going the wrong direction. They have their own challenges. And so we don’t want to take that personal. Just keep focusing on what you want. And here’s the thing, don’t wait. Don’t wait, jump, you’ll figure out how to land. So keep moving forward. Always take the time to be grateful for the people around you be grateful for what you have. And just know you’re never going to do this alone. But you are going to do it yourself. And so with those things, just keep moving forward. Let let all the challenges be the fence post that guide you to where you’re going to ultimately end up and that’s to live your full potential. And if you do that, and you stay positive knowing that in any moment and all can change in the right direction, you’re going to have a successful life. And you know take the time to enjoy it all while you’re really going for enjoy the process and help people along the way.
